For the record, I'm referencing Discworld here.

But as far as the director's commentary track goes, Rube's speech patterns are tied to his confidence. When he's strong and feeling good, he has no tells that make you think he's different from anyone else. If you break that by making him feel self conscious, he regresses into something not entirely childlike but "notably inferior". It's not an accident he's shooting down his own ideas and branding himself with a slur before anyone else can. But this is a new Rube. Spoiler alert, he's about to become completely confident and never backslide again.

Having this exchange between the two of them is important to me. Sans subtext:
Rube: "Don't listen to me, I'm retarded."
Allie: "Never say that again, you're a genius."
